The Cloth
cloth for quilts marbled fabric
I use 100% cotton fabric and batting most of the time. After experimenting with silk, wool, polyester blends, etc, for years, I have found that cotton irons flat while piecing and is sturdy and easy to work with. It also holds colors well and is ideal for marbling, painting and dying.
I have also done gradation dying of cotton and dislike the process. On the other hand I started painting on cloth and enjoy this new area of exploration.
As with any project you need to consider what you are going to use the quilt for. Covering a newborn baby would require different fabrics than a quilt designed for a wall. So the correct choice is by considering the purpose of the piece.
Holding my fabrics, simply refolding or ironing them triggers the beginnings of a quilt. Even when I have designs in mind pushing forward for attention, it is always the fabric to solidify an idea. Cotton feels natural, warm and inviting in my hands as it responds to vision and spirit.
