Patterns in quilts cover a large range of ideas from the fabric you pick, the appliqué or patchwork design chosen and the appropriate quilting motif. I have broken down these concepts into sections discussing each idea to help the quilter find inspiration. When you have made quilts for many years it can be challenging to try new techniques in sewing, use a patchwork block never tried or a modern appliqué or traditional design you haven't explored yet. Doing the same overall quilting to connect the three layers can make the process long and arduous. Don't be afraid to try a new idea even if the first time you don't execute it perfectly. You learn from your mis-takes and I have made lots of them over the years.
Marbled patterns shows different cottons I have created. Marbling patterns mesmerize, touching some long ago place in my spirit. This feeling happens every time I study my marbled cloth. I am carried back to a place in time of quiet flow and uncensored expression.
Quilting motifs are as numerous as all the other design elements in a quilt. For many years it was my favorite part of the quilt process.
Patchwork patterns satisfy our logical brain. Every fabric patch needs to be precisely sewn together to keep the block flat. Balancing the light, medium and dark colors is essential. The possibilities are endless.
Appliqué patterns can work our intuitive brain allowing us to draw with the fabric. Pictures are fun to create with the help of fabric designs. A beautiful sunset, a winter scene, butterflies, a cat sleeping, dancing, and angels are just a sampling of images to sew.
