Log Cabin Blues
log cabin blues quilt

96 x 96
100 % hand marbled and dyed cottons
Machine pieced and quilted, 196 Log Cabin blocks

The log cabin design was drafted on my Mac computer and went through several versions. I printed out the blocks and paper pieced each square. The quilt incorporates over 100 different marble fabrics with most of my blues represented. It took three months of paper piecing sewing. Choosing the marble and dyed fabrics required considerable time and my studio looked chaotic for many weeks with fabric strewn everywhere. Even though you can plan out the basic design on the computer, finding the correct fabrics is never a quick process.
When you look at the blue star on the left you will notice that it is also made up of greens and aquas. The red diamond shape around the blue star was challenging because I didn't want the warm color to dominate the blues and greens.
The yellow diamond on the left fades to blue as it enters the center of the quilt. Placing the warm soft yellows took a lot of planning and studying. Many fabrics in this quilt are the last of certain marble fabrics I treasured until the very last bit.
What made this quilt fun for me was trying a new way of doing log cabins and allowing the design to spontaneously develop as I picked fabrics. The subtle variations could not be captured in the computer design but only in working with the fabrics.
It was a joy to quilt as my eyes drank in the beauty of each cloth. The dominate blues create a restful feeling yet full of energy. The piece is also a marvelous library of my marble cottons and remains in my personal collection.
