Log Cabin Quilts..............................>>> start
Log cabin quilts are one of the oldest patchwork patterns in the United States. Traditionally the center square was red representing the chimney on the house. Log cabin blocks offered the quilter a way to use scrap fabrics to create a block often using dark and light color fabrics.

Log cabin blocks have an isolated center square and stripes of fabric are sewn around it expanding the size of the block. The width of the stripes can vary with each block.

I began piecing log cabin quilts in the 1970’s. Over the years I have manipulated the light, medium and dark colors to create many different geometric designs. Sometimes I change the center square into a diamond adding 4 small triangles to create the center square. As you scroll through the log cabin quilts you will see the variations.
The largest Log Cabin quilt I have made is Log Cabin Blues. I use this quilt as a meditation piece. Fortunately I have a large enough wall to hang it on. The blue marbled cottons mixed with other colors offer a calming, centering feeling to the room. Often I meditate using this piece as the focal point of the meditation.

Variations of the log cabin block are courthouse steps and pineapple, both of which I have sewn. Yet I always seem drawn back to the simplicity of the log cabin block. I have pieced blocks as small as 2 inch and as large as 7 inch. I also vary the number of bars on each side from 3 to 5 and this adds more interest in the quilt. All the log cabin quilts in this gallery have these bar variations and some also have the diamond center.
