Compass Quilts
|
|
Mariner's Compass quilts have been around for several hundred years. Compass patterns have been around for thousands of years. The circular nature of compass patterns is appealing and challenging to sew. One can use the quilt pattern in designs ranging from traditional to abstract settings. Keeping the points sharp, preventing bulky centers and getting the design to lay flat are some of the challenges the quilter deals with piecing compass quilt patterns.
I have been piecing Mariner's Compass quilt patterns for close to 20 years. Originally I did circular blocks that would then be appliquéd onto square background fabric. Later I developed compass patterns that created a square block. These are easier to piece into quilts. Occasionally I will make a circular block like Compass Stars.
My recent compass quilt is Morning Dream, which shows many 16-point compass patterns. These compasses were created doing paper piecing and sewn into a square block.
This section will be expanding since I still have many compass ideas to sew. |
